CNR International - Baobab field
impROV have recently proven
the merits of two of our innovative
“IMPROVISER” Subsea Torque Tools during CNR
International’s Baobab field subsea completions. Following a successful workshop
demonstration of a stab-plate make up operation CNR committed to a purchase of
two of these tools to support their offshore campaign. The IMPROVISER uniquely gives the user the ability to operate Class 1 through 4 rotary (ISO 13628-8, Section 12.9) interfaces without having to recover the host ROV to the surface to change either hydraulic motors of end-effecter sockets. The tool has a unique Hi/Lo torque selection function, enabling the user to select two different torque bandwidths from a single motor thus allowing fine control across the entire torque range. Additionally the tool has a Self Adjusting End-Effecter meaning that the tool picks up on the three variations of drive stem applicable across the torque range without any need for subsea change-out or operator intervention. The Baobab completion work was able to draw direct benefit from these features, as there was a requirement to operate both Class 2 and Class 3 interfaces on a single dive during each Xmas Tree installation. The IMPROVISER facilitated this easily and, in a water depth of approximately 4,500 feet, resulted in savings of many thousands of dollars as no tool recovery was necessary between operations. The work was carried out with the IMPROVISER integrated to Sonsubs XL-8 Work-Class ROV. Integration went very smoothly with Sonsub personnel quickly becoming comfortable with operation of the tool. CNR Subsea Engineering personnel commented “The impROV torque tooling performed brilliantly. The Sonsub ROV crew are more than happy with the tools operations. We've been very impressed with the tool and its associated controls.” The order was completed to an extremely tight timescale to get a system ready for the initial completion, with the second Torque Tool having followed on later.
